Trademark registration
We work with Ukrainian and foreign companies in Kyiv and across Ukraine, remotely under a power of attorney.
Why register a trademark in Ukraine
A registered trademark is your exclusive right to a name or logo for specific goods and services. Without registration, protecting your brand name from copycats is much harder.
Stop copycats
You can require others to stop using an identical or confusingly similar mark for the same or related goods and services.
First to file wins
Priority goes to whoever files first. A competitor or distributor can register your unprotected name and then make claims against you.
A business asset
A trademark can be sold, licensed or franchised. Marketplaces, retail chains and investors often ask to see the certificate.

How trademark registration in Ukraine works
The process has five stages, from the clearance search to entry in the state register. We prepare the first three; during examination, we manage the file and respond to the examiner.
Clearance search
We look for marks that sound, look or mean the same as yours. We also check whether the name simply describes the product, a common ground for refusal.
Nice classes
The Nice Classification has 45 classes. Protection covers only the goods and services you list, so we draft the list around your real business.
Filing with UANIPIO
UANIPIO is Ukraine’s national IP office. We file electronically, and the application is published in the official bulletin.
Examination
A formal examination checks documents and fees; a substantive one checks whether the mark qualifies for protection.
Certificate
After a decision to register, you pay the issuance fees. The certificate is valid for 10 years from the filing date.
The office makes the decision, so no lawyer can guarantee registration. Our job is to make sure a refusal does not come from a weak search, a poorly drafted list or a missed deadline.
Check your mark before you file
Send us your name or logo and what you sell, and we will assess the risks and quote a price before any work starts.
Timeline and key deadlines
Trademark registration in Ukraine usually takes more than a year: according to UANIPIO, examination takes about 14 months on average. Office actions and third-party oppositions can extend it.
| Stage | Deadline under Ukrainian law |
|---|---|
| Third-party opposition | 3 months from publication of the application |
| Reply to an office action | 2 months, extendable |
| Appeal against a refusal | 2 months from receipt of the decision |
| Renewal | Last 6 months of the term, or 6 more months with a 50% surcharge |
We quote our own timeline for the search and filing after assessing your mark. Rights run from the filing date, so it pays to file before you launch.
How we work
You send the mark
Your name or logo and a short description of your business.
We search and quote
We run the search, draft the class list and explain the risks and cost.
We file
Once you approve the list, we file and send you the filing date.
We take it to the certificate
We answer the examiner, track deadlines and tell you when fees are due.
Under Ukrainian law, foreign companies without a presence in Ukraine must act through a patent attorney. In these cases, we work with a partner patent attorney, and you deal with us in English.
What affects the cost
We quote the price after assessing your mark and before any work starts. Official state fees are paid separately.
Number of classes
Drives both our workload and the state fees.
Type of mark
Word, logo or combined, in color or not.
Applicant
One or several owners, Ukrainian or foreign.
Scope
A search only, full handling, opposition work or an international filing.
Protecting your brand after registration
A certificate is where protection starts: you then need to use the mark, act on infringements and document every transfer of rights.
Infringement claims
We send cease-and-desist letters. In court, our lawyers prepare the case and partner attorneys represent you.
Licenses
Permission for a franchisee or your own Ukrainian subsidiary to use the mark.
Assignments
Selling the mark in full or for part of the goods and services.
NDAs
Confidentiality for designers and contractors who work on the brand before filing.
Our lawyers and accountants work as one team, so we cover the tax side too. License fees count as royalties under Ukrainian tax law, and we address that in the contract itself. We draft these agreements as part of contract drafting and review.
International registration and refusals
You can protect your mark abroad through the Madrid System or by filing in each country. We handle both with partner patent attorneys.
Under the Madrid System, run by WIPO, one application filed through UANIPIO can cover many countries. For the first five years, it depends on the Ukrainian base mark, so we prepare that filing with particular care.
If the office signals a refusal, you have two months to respond. A final refusal can be appealed to the office’s Appeals Chamber or to court within two months.
